More info:

Dilong is a genus of extinct, feathered dinosaurs of the tyrannosauroid family. They lived in what is now China during the Early Cretaceous Era around 126 million years ago.

Dilong is a relatively recent discovery. It was formally described and named in 2004 by Xu Xing—a Chinese paleontologist who has named more dinosaurs than any other living paleontologist. The only known species is Dilong paradoxus (帝龍 in Chinese, which means “Emperor Dragon”), and is based on the holotype specimen IVPP 14243, a partial skeleton and complete skull kept at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleo-anthropology in Beijing.

Dilong was rather small compared to other tyrannosauroids. Fossilized protofeather impressions have confirmed that Dilong, and possibly other members of the tyrannosauroid family, were indeed feathered. But protofeathers are not quite like modern bird feathers. They were downy, plumaceous, and likely evolved for warmth rather than flight. Dilong had a unique, s-shaped brain; likely unique to the creature’s small size since larger tyrannosauroids had linear brains.
