Dolerite Bluestone from the Stonehenge Quarry (202)
This stone is from the same prehistoric quarry where the oldest monoliths at Stonehenge were sourced. It is a bluestone called Preseli Spotted Dolerite after the Preseli Hills of Wales where the stones were quarried, and where we recovered these fragments.
Recent petrographic studies of chippings from this quarry have confirmed that they are identical to the bluestones installed at Stonehenge. Meaning the massive stones were hauled 150 miles (250 km) from the quarry to the site of Stonehenge around 3100 BC.
This type of stone was likely used at Stonehenge because it was believed to have healing properties. We now know this isn’t true.
